What it is

ENERGY STAR says to use a UL-listed metal box marked "For Use With Ceiling Fans". The box is mounted above the ceiling, the fan attaches to it, and it houses the wiring the fan needs.

Why it matters

ENERGY STAR says ceiling fans can weigh as much as 50 pounds. One maker's manual says to mount its fan directly from building structure or an outlet box marked acceptable for fan support, to reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, or injury.

Joists and braces

ENERGY STAR says the fan should be anchored to a ceiling joist if possible, or to a special mounting bracket installed between joists.

Who does this

Box and bracket work is electrical and structural work. Hire a licensed electrician.

FAQ

Only if the box is marked for fan support. ENERGY STAR says a fixture swap most likely needs a new box.
Your electrician can check the marking.

General information only. Ceiling fans and light fixtures are electrical equipment. Hire a licensed electrician for any installation, wiring, electrical box, switch, or light kit work, and follow the fan maker's manual and your local electrical code. Before cleaning, changing a bulb, or checking a fan, turn it off and let the blades stop and the bulbs cool; turn off power at the circuit breaker before any work near the fan's wiring. Use a stable ladder, and if you are not comfortable working overhead, call a pro. Never use a bulb above the maximum wattage marked on the fixture. If a fan or light flickers, buzzes, smells hot, or trips a breaker, stop using it and call a licensed electrician.
